Dear WANDERERS, PRISONERS, FOOLS AND REBELS...

Before I begin, I would like to thank pastor Charles for giving me the topic idea for this week's blog. Today I am going to be talking about Psalms 107 – a psalm that continuously praises God for his wonderful works of deliverance through his wonderful word. Above all, what truly inspired me to speak about this is that, this psalm constantly reminds us that the best sacrifice we can offer to God is a faithful and obedient life. Let me explain.

The psalm itself addresses 4 different types of people in utter distress and how God rescues them; teaching us 4 very valuable lessons. They go by the names ‘wanderers’, as mentioned in verses 4-9 ‘prisoners’ mentioned in verses 10-16 and the fools and rebels which are also mentioned in verses 17-20. This alone enables me to clarify that no matter how extreme our calamity, God will always be able to break through and help us. God is and always will be loving and kind – especially to those who are distressed. In the very first two verses, the Bible describes how Paul boldly stated “Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story – those he redeemed from the hand of the foe". These two verses highlight the declaration of the mere fact that when we live in God’s presence, we will not be able to keep this glorious experience to ourselves. But more than anything, he wants us to tell everyone all that he has done; bringing me to my first point. God has done so much for each and every one of us out of his unconditional love and compassionate nature to the point where we also have so much to thank him with in return.

Now if we take a look at verses 4 – 9 in Psalms chapter 107, we begin to notice the immense shift in focus to the lost, hungry, thirsty and exhausted wanderers, subsequently mirroring the Israelites in exile. However, what many of us fail to realise is that they also typify anyone who has not found the satisfaction that comes from knowing God; bringing me to my second point and that is this. Those who recognise that they went astray can ALSO receive the offer of Jesus to satisfy their needs. For John 14:16 states that only Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life”.

Prisoners. As I have mentioned previously, prisoners are also addressed in this passage. Most people think that those in prison deserve whatever misery they experience as punishment for their crimes. But God loves all men and women no matter how far they have fallen. He wants to reach them with love and dispel their gloomy face. We must also understand that throughout the world, people are imprisoned for their faith whilst others suffer as victims of injustice; bringing me to my third point. It is equally as important to remember that God loves us despite how far we have gone down dangerous paths and even though we ourselves are not prisoners, we should always pray for those in prison. We should always pray for ministries and Christian chaplains who take God’s message of love and forgiveness to prisoners.

Finally, I want us all to turn to verses 17 to 20 and upon reading these verses we can comprehend a huge shift in focus to the final two types of people this chapter has been talking about from the very beginning – fools and rebels. In our society, fools and rebels are known for bringing trouble upon themselves. Although despite this, these verses continuously mention the receival of God’s free gift of forgiveness emphasising how good and how gracious our God really is, for anyone can begin a new life and break with the past. This brings me to my fourth and final point. By faith in Christ, we can break addictions, heal memories and restore broken relationships. If we ask Christ to take control of our lives, he will answer us. For his love even reaches those who have rebelled against him.

And so, this is why this psalm was very inspirational to me. As you can see, it offers a great deal of hope for those who have made a mess of their lives.
